The only table on this boat is the bench you’re sitting on.

A jon boat is 32 to 60 inches wide with a flat bottom that rides over the waves rather than cutting through them. There is no console to speak of, no gunwale worth the name, and one, two or three bench seats. The bench is the table.

This is a 5.2-inch base that stands on it. Nothing is drilled, clamped or stuck down.

He is right, and for a reason he may not have had to hand: marine suction cups need a smooth, non-porous surface and are rated 3 lb on textured ones. Riveted aluminium is neither smooth nor flat.

This is our whole mechanism, described by somebody who was not selling anything. A wide base turns a surface into a place to put a drink. We just made the base and left the cup alone.

Fair. This is $14.95, and the cheapest flush-mount marine holder we found lists at $1.93 — plus a hole in the boat. We are not the cheap option and we are not pretending to be.

There is not much boat to work with.

32 to 60 inches wide
That is the whole hull. A TRACKER Grizzly 1436 is 13′10″ long by 4′5″ wide with a 3-foot bottom, rated to 580 lb.
Bench seats, and that is the furniture
The Grizzly’s standard feature list reads “centre & aft bench seats.” One, two or three, usually bench type. There is no table because there is nowhere to put one.
A flat bottom rides over, not through
Which is exactly what makes it a good shallow-water boat and exactly why the bench moves when anybody shifts their weight.
And it is aluminium, riveted
Not a smooth moulded panel. There is nothing for a suction cup to hold and nothing for adhesive to trust.

—Does it actually work

It wobbles. Then it settles.

Somebody shifts on the bench and the drink comes back level. The base is 5.2 inches across and the whole thing has to lean a long way before it goes.

Width, and nothing else.

The base

5.2 inches across and fixed. It moves the edge the drink would have to tip over much farther out, so the whole thing has to lean much farther before it goes.

The fins

Six of them, holding the bottom inch. Cans and bottles slide on from the top; tumblers drop in. Drink and base then rock as one piece.

The surface

The rubber plants the base on the bench and lifts away clean. It marks nothing, and there is nothing to adjust.

—What seats and what does not

Bases between two and three inches. Yours probably is.

A standard 12 oz can is 2.6 inches across the bottom. A Stanley Quencher 40 oz is 3.1. Both seat. A mug with a handle does not — the handle lands exactly where the fins grip.

OMG!!!!! —The limits, in one place

What it does not do.

It holds through ordinary movement. Not through everything.
The maker has watched an empty can — the lightest, worst case there is — stay put in over forty miles an hour of wind, and a customer on a boat reports the same thing unprompted in the reviews below. Idling, drifting, the trolling motor: fine. A hard turn or a real chop is not, and neither is anything else in the boat that is not tied down.
It does not attach to anything.
No clamp, no bracket, no suction, no adhesive. On riveted aluminium there is nothing for suction to hold anyway, which is half the reason this exists.
A wet bench is a different surface.
Nothing here has been tested on aluminium that is wet, slimed or covered in scales. Rinse the bench before you set it down and it behaves; we are not going to claim more than that.
A handled mug does not seat.
The handle lands where the fins grip.
It is not spill-proof — nothing is.
It resists tipping. A hard enough knock moves anything.

Scott Rodriguez made the first one after a full drink went over on a soft cushion with three kids under three in the house. It was built for spills.

It was not designed for boats, and nobody with a jon boat asked for this page. It exists because a wide base does the same thing on a bench as it does on a couch, and because everything it does not do on the water is written above.

Straight answers.

Will it stay on the bench while I run to the next spot?

Through ordinary running, better than you would expect. Through a hard turn or real chop, no — nothing loose in a boat this size does. Put it in the dry box for the run if you are moving properly.

Will it stick to riveted aluminium?

It does not stick to anything — there is no suction and no adhesive. It sits on the bench, and the rubber plants where it is set. That is also why suction mounts are the wrong answer here: they need a smooth, non-porous panel.

What about a wet bench?

Rinse it first. We have not tested it on aluminium covered in slime and we are not going to pretend we have.

Will it hold my 40 oz Stanley?

Yes. The Quencher H2.0 40 oz is 3.1 inches at the base and the fins flex to 3.15, so it seats with a push rather than dropping in.

Why not just fit the $1.93 flush holder?

Honestly, do — if the boat is yours and you do not mind a hole in the bench. It is cheaper than this by an order of magnitude and it never moves. This is for the boat you would rather leave alone, or the rental, or the one you are selling in two years.

Will it blow out of the boat?

Empty and unloaded, in enough wind, anything might. With a drink in it, the maker has seen an almost-empty can hold in over forty miles an hour.

Can it live in the boat?

Shore 85A TPU and water does not hurt it. Long-term UV exposure is not something we have tested, so we make no claim about it. Rinse and wipe, or run it through the dishwasher.

That is the honest comparison and we are not going to dress it up. You are paying the difference to not put a hole in the bench. If the hole does not bother you, the hole is the better deal.

I just use a koozie and live with it.

Plenty of people do, and they say so on the forums. If the occasional spill is not costing you anything, it is not costing you anything.

Will it get in the way?

It is 2.8 inches tall and 3.6 ounces, and it picks up with one hand. In a boat this size that matters more than usual.

Is it going to look daft on a tin boat?

It is a matte rubber base with no branding you can read from the next seat. Nothing about it is trying to be a feature.
